One of the most frequently asked questions about September 11, 2001 is also one of the most misunderstood:
Why did World Trade Center 7 collapse even though no plane crashed into it?
The answer lies in what happened after the North Tower fell.
On September 11, four commercial aircraft were hijacked by 19 al-Qaeda terrorists. Two struck the World Trade Center towers in New York, one hit the Pentagon, and Flight 93 crashed in Pennsylvania after passengers fought back.
The attacks killed 2,977 people.
But several hours later, another major building at the World Trade Center site collapsed.
WTC 7 was a 47-story skyscraper located north of the Twin Towers. No aircraft struck the building.
However, when the North Tower collapsed, enormous amounts of debris struck WTC 7, damaging parts of the structure and starting fires on multiple floors.
Those fires burned uncontrolled for roughly seven hours.
According to the extensive investigation by the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), heat from the fires caused floor beams and girders to expand and move. This eventually led to the failure of a critical interior column, Column 79.
That failure triggered a progressive collapse that brought down the rest of the building.
So while WTC 7 was not struck by an airplane, it was not untouched. It suffered structural damage from falling debris and then endured prolonged, uncontrolled fires.
The collapse has nevertheless remained the subject of conspiracy theories and debate for decades.
NIST’s three-year investigation concluded that fire was the primary cause of WTC 7’s collapse, and its findings were published in 2008.
