Reese welcomed her daughter Ava Phillipe on September 9, 1999, with her then-husband Ryan Philippe. In a chat with Jay Leno, Reese shared the story behind the name ‘Ava’ and how she and Ryan came up with it.
“My daughter’s name is Ava… [like] Ava Gardner, because to me she was the only woman who could break Sinatra. So the idea of that name to me is very classy and strong.”
While she was with her now ex-husband, Ryan Phillippe, Witherspoon later talked about the difficulties she faced as a mom. At first, she tried to do it all by herself, but soon she realized that the sleepless nights were really affecting her health.
”I did not have a lot of support with my first baby, and I learned really early, like, this is not going to work,” she told People Magazine. ”I was lucky enough to have money saved and I didn’t have to work, but it’s just not a one-person job.”
Now, Reese Witherspoon’s oldest child has grown up. Ava Philippe went to UC Berkeley and has followed in her mom’s footsteps. The 26-year-old has a few acting credits, including roles in the 2024 TV series Doctor Odyssey and earlier this year in Ransom Canyon.
