From Valene Ewing to Television Icon: The Extraordinary Career of Joan Van Ark

Long before she became famous as Valene Ewing, Joan Van Ark had already built an impressive career on the stage.

After studying at the Yale School of Drama, Van Ark began her professional career at Minneapolis’ Guthrie Theater, appearing in productions including Molière’s The Miser. She later performed on Broadway and earned a Tony Award nomination for The School for Wives in 1971.

But her defining television role arrived in the late 1970s.

Van Ark first appeared as Valene Ewing on Dallas before carrying the character into the long-running spin-off Knots Landing in 1979. She remained one of the show’s central stars for 13 seasons, becoming one of the most recognizable faces of American primetime television.

Valene was far more than a typical television character. Through marriages, heartbreak, family struggles and dramatic twists, Van Ark brought emotional depth and vulnerability to the role. Her performance earned her multiple award nominations and two Soap Opera Digest Awards for Best Actress.

A Career Beyond Knots Landing

Van Ark never limited herself to television. Throughout her career, she continued working in theater, appearing in productions ranging from classical drama to contemporary plays. Her stage work included Barefoot in the Park, Three Tall Women, Cyrano de Bergerac, Macbeth and A Little Night Music.

She also returned to the role of Valene after leaving Knots Landing, appearing in the 1997 miniseries Knots Landing: Back to the Cul-de-Sac and later reprising the character in the Dallas revival.

Today, Van Ark is 83 and remains closely associated with the character who made her a television favorite.

While discussions about how celebrities change with age often attract attention, Van Ark’s most lasting legacy isn’t her appearance—it’s the decades of work she has given audiences.

From the stage to Dallas and Knots Landing, Joan Van Ark built a career defined by talent, determination and versatility.
