Donald Trump is a father of four children from three relationships, and his youngest, Barron, was born in 2006 when he was 19. Although Barron’s life would be one of privilege, the moment Melania told Donald she was pregnant did not unfold exactly as she expected.
Barron’s childhood was steeped in luxury. Born the year after his parents wed, he grew up in Trump Tower with freedoms—like being allowed to paint on his floor—and toys and privileges handed to him almost on request. At the same time, Melania, who came from a working-class background in Slovenia, was determined to give Barron more than material comforts.
In her memoir, Melania describes a “chaotic” scene in her home office when Barron was small: books scattered across the floor while he played in a toy car. In a Fox interview, she stressed how important it was to show her son the rhythms of everyday work life—so he could see productivity, ideas, and consequences at close range.
“I think it’s very important that we show our children that we are working too. To give them an example of how life is,” she said. “That they see us, that we are productive, that we have ideas, that ideas come to life. And that’s how I was showing Barron.”
Before Melania, Trump had been married twice. His first marriage, to Ivana Trump, lasted from 1977 to 1990 and produced three children—Ivanka, Donald Jr., and Eric. His second marriage, to Marla Maples, lasted five years and produced a daughter, Tiffany. Barron remains Trump’s youngest child—and the only one with Melania—but at the time his parents considered expanding the family.
Melania later recounted how Donald reacted when she told him she was pregnant. Speaking on Fox & Friends, she said Donald wanted more children after Barron’s birth, while she felt content with just one.
“I was always perfectly fine with one. And Donald was encouraging us to have more,” she recalled. “And I said, like, ‘I’m completely fine with one because it’s a very busy life.’”
When Melania first learned she was pregnant—about six months after their wedding—she hurried to share the news with Donald. In an interview with People, she said his initial response was not immediate elation but mild shock.
“He came home and I told him he’d be a daddy. And his reaction was … at first he needed to take it in. It was a real surprise. And then he was very happy,” she said.
Donald himself later reflected that while he had expected to have children, the timing took him aback. “I expected we were going to have children, so I wasn’t totally surprised. But I was surprised by the speed of it. It happened very quickly,” he said.
