Mary’s marriage to Ed came with a challenge: his mother, Scarlett, who never missed a chance to show her dislike. From the insults on their wedding day to her ongoing criticism, it felt like Scarlett was determined to make things hard for Mary. Each visit only added to the growing tension… until something even more surprising happened.
As Mary and Ed drove in silence toward Scarlett’s house, Mary couldn’t help but think about how much she was looking forward to leaving. Scarlett really didn’t like her at all.
At their wedding, Scarlett had even shown up with a veil on; Mary was just relieved she didn’t wear a full wedding dress. Scarlett was one of those moms who just couldn’t let go of her “little boy,” no matter how old he got.
When they finally pulled into the driveway, Mary hesitated before getting out, following Ed slowly. She took a deep breath, preparing herself for whatever mean comment Scarlett would throw at her this time.
With a forced smile, she tried to stay positive, hoping it would help her get through the visit. Scarlett opened the door with a big smile and immediately hugged Ed tightly.
“Oh, my baby! You’re finally here! I’ve missed you more than you know!” she exclaimed, holding him close.
“Mom, it’s only been a week,” Ed replied, easing himself out of her hug.
Scarlett shot Ed a quick glance before focusing on Mary, her face changing. “So, Mary, I see you’ve put on a bit of weight,” she said with a sly grin.
Mary sighed softly, trying not to react. Instead, she managed a stiff smile. “Nice to see you too, Scarlett.”
Dinner dragged on as Scarlett started her usual rant. “Mary can’t cook. She doesn’t have a good job. And she doesn’t even know how to dress right,” Scarlett announced, looking at Ed for backup.
Mary clenched her fork, holding back her words. She knew that saying anything would only make things worse. But then Scarlett said something that pushed Mary over the edge—her words were sharper than ever.
Scarlett stared at Mary across the table. “Well,” she said slowly, “I think it’s about time you gave me a grandchild. Or maybe,” she added with a smirk, “Mary has… some problems?”
Mary felt a heavy weight in her chest. They had been trying to have a baby for six months, and Scarlett’s comments hurt like a fresh cut. “How could you say that?” Mary yelled. “Stay out of our business! Maybe it’s your son who has the issue!”
Scarlett crossed her arms, her eyes narrowing. “That’s ridiculous! My son is in great health, thank you very much. But you, Mary… who knows what you were doing before you met Eddie?”
Mary’s face turned red with fury. “You’re such a witch!” she screamed, her voice shaking. She looked at Ed, who was silent. “Are you really just going to sit there and let her talk to me like this?”
Scarlett shot a glare at her son. “Yes, Eddie, tell your crazy wife to be respectful,” she said, her voice dripping with sarcasm.
Ed just shrugged, still focused on his phone. “You two can figure it out.”
Scarlett leaned closer to Mary, speaking softly. “My neighbor said herbal teas might help. She believes they work wonders for people like you.”
Mary opened her mouth to respond but suddenly felt sick. She pressed her hand to her stomach, forcing the words out. “Why don’t you… try your own tea?”
Unable to hold it back, Mary bolted to the bathroom. When she returned, still pale, she looked at Ed. “I want to go home.”
“Okay,” he said, barely glancing up.
Scarlett tilted her head, pretending to look worried. “What’s the matter? Are you feeling okay?”
Mary squinted at her. “You probably made me sick,” she whispered, too exhausted to argue any longer.
On the way home, Mary’s thoughts were racing. She needed to find out for sure. “Ed, can we stop at the pharmacy?” she asked softly.
He let out a sigh but turned into the parking lot. She rushed inside, grabbed a pregnancy test, and paid quickly. Once home, she dashed to the bathroom. Holding her breath, she waited. Then, the results showed up—two lines. She gasped, a wave of excitement and relief washing over her.
She hurried to find Ed, her face beaming. “Ed, we’re going to have a baby!”
Ed looked at the test, his face hard to read. “Oh. That’s… nice,” he said quietly, not really looking at her.
Mary felt a little disappointed. She was thrilled, but Ed’s reaction dimmed her joy a bit.
Weeks went by since Mary discovered she was pregnant, and she was finally starting to get used to the idea of being a mom. It was their first doctor’s appointment, and she was sitting on the bed, waiting for Ed to finish his shower so they could head out together.
She really wanted him to show some excitement, but lately, he seemed so far away, lost in his own thoughts and not really present.
While she was waiting, Ed’s phone buzzed next to her, lighting up with a new message. Normally, she would respect his privacy, but his recent behavior made her second-guess that.
Without thinking much, she reached for his phone. When she tried to unlock it, she was surprised to see a passcode. She couldn’t remember him ever using one before. On a whim, she entered his birth date, and to her shock, the screen opened up.
What she saw made her stomach drop: a picture of a woman in revealing clothes, smiling in a way that made her feel sick. Below the image was a message that said, “Can’t wait to see you, baby.”
Her hands shook as she scrolled through the chat, each message feeling like a stab in the heart. Ed had told this woman he was rich and owned a construction company, which was nothing like his actual job.
With her heart racing, she took screenshots, saving them on her phone as proof of his lies.
When Ed finally came out of the bathroom, she was there, holding his phone. Her face was pale, and her eyes were filled with pain and anger.
“What is this?!” she yelled, shoving the phone in his direction.
His expression turned hard, and he grabbed the phone from her hand. “None of your business,” he snapped.
Mary’s voice rose, filled with pain. “None of my business? You’re cheating on me! And I’m pregnant, Ed—your pregnant wife!”
His eyes squinted. “Maybe you’re the one who’s been unfaithful,” he retorted, a sneer appearing on his lips. “How can I be sure this baby is even mine?”
Mary felt like the ground was shaking beneath her. “Are you kidding me? We’ve been trying for six months! And now you’re saying this?” Her voice cracked.
Ed folded his arms. “Six months with no success, and now suddenly it happens? Seems a bit too convenient.”
“You’ve been with that other woman for over six months, Ed. I saw everything! You’ve lied to her too! You told her you’re wealthy and that you own a business!” Mary’s voice shook with anger.
Ed just shrugged, showing no emotion. “It doesn’t matter. I’m going to file for divorce. This marriage is finished.”
“Do you really think that woman will stay with you when she finds out who you really are?” Mary shot back.
“Trust me, she won’t discover the truth. And when this is done, I’ll take the house and everything else you own. Plus, my mom’s money.” He grinned smugly.
Mary’s voice grew louder in defiance. “This house was bought by my dad!”
“Yeah? But it’s in both our names,” Ed replied with a self-satisfied smile.
Mary’s voice softened as she asked, “What about the baby?”
Ed simply shrugged. “You can’t say it’s mine until it’s born. By then, it’ll be too late.” With that, he kicked her out, leaving her in tears.
Feeling desperate and hurt, Mary decided to go to Scarlett and reveal everything. Scarlett needed to know the truth about her son.
As she sat in front of Scarlett, her heart raced while she shared everything—Ed’s lies, his cheating, and his threats about the house. She held her breath, bracing for Scarlett to ignore her. But to her surprise, Scarlett listened, her face turning white.
Scarlett looked down, tears starting to form in her eyes. “He’s been stealing money from me too,” she said quietly. “Every single dollar his dad left me, all my savings. He claimed he needed it for doctor appointments because you couldn’t get pregnant.”
Mary shook her head, feeling a mix of anger and sadness. “He never even went to a doctor. Whenever I mentioned it, he just refused. I checked our bank account, Scarlett. He’s been withdrawing large sums.”
Scarlett tightened her fists. “I can’t believe my son would do this,” she said, her voice trembling. “He lied to both of us.”
Mary’s voice cracked as she replied. “I don’t know what to do. I’m pregnant, and he says he’ll take everything. He doesn’t even think the baby is his.”
Scarlett’s expression turned serious. “I won’t let anyone harm my future grandchild,” she said with determination. “We’ll make him face the consequences. You saved those messages, right?”
Mary nodded. “Yes, I took screenshots.”
Scarlett paused for a moment, then added, “I have one of his toothbrushes here. We can get a DNA test when the baby arrives.”
Mary looked at Scarlett, surprised. “You’ve never been on my side before. What changed?”
Scarlett let out a deep breath. “I was just a mom trying to keep my son safe. But now I realize I have to keep others safe from him. His dad was a liar too. I put up with it, thinking Ed would be different. But he’s not. I don’t want anyone else to go through what I did.”
Mary and Scarlett moved ahead with their plan. Mary faced Ed directly and showed him the screenshots of his texts.
“I have all your messages,” she said confidently, holding her phone up. “And I’ve already shared them with Scarlett. You can’t manipulate anyone anymore.”
Ed looked shocked, but Mary didn’t back down. “Here’s the deal,” she said firmly. “Give up your claim to the house, sign these divorce papers, and agree to pay child support. If you do this, I’ll keep quiet. If not, I’ll make sure your girlfriend knows the truth.”
Feeling trapped, Ed agreed and signed the papers without saying a word. He had no clue that Scarlett had the last part of the plan ready.
Scarlett went to Ed’s girlfriend herself, telling her everything—his lies, his fake stories about being rich, and all his tricks. She made sure nothing was left out, so her son’s lies would fall apart.
When Ed found out, Scarlett was at Mary’s house, sipping tea. Suddenly, there was loud banging on the front door, followed by Ed’s angry shouting.
“You promised you wouldn’t tell if I did everything you asked!” he yelled through the door, his voice sharp with anger.
Mary looked at the door calmly and replied, “I didn’t tell her anything, Ed.”
Scarlett spoke louder so Ed could hear her. “I did,” she said confidently. “I told you that lying is bad, but it seems you didn’t get it.”
“You’re both crazy!” Ed yelled, his voice full of anger. “You’ll wish you hadn’t done this! I’ll make you suffer!”
At that moment, the police showed up after a neighbor called them. They held Ed back and took him away as he kept shouting threats, while Mary and Scarlett remained calm inside, finishing their tea.
