Mia Robertson, the youngest child of Jase and Missy Robertson from Duck Dynasty, was born with a condition called cleft lip and palate. This means she has a gap in her upper lip that can also affect her gums.
According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about one in every 1,600 babies in the U.S. is born with this condition.
Now 18 years old, Mia has had to go through 13 surgeries, and she just had her 14th surgery recently. Her family is really hoping that this will be the last surgery she needs to finally fix her condition.
The young girl stays cheerful during all her surgeries. Most importantly, she wants to be a source of inspiration for other kids who have the same condition. With the help of her family, Mia started the Mia Moo Fund to ensure that every child can have a smile on their face.
Missy Robertson explained to Christian Post, “One goal of the Mia Moo Fund is to raise awareness about the journey of cleft lip and palate. The other goal is to provide medical support for families living in America.”
On his podcast Unashamed, Jase Robertson gave an update about Mia and mentioned that she is doing well in her recovery.
“She’s doing great. She’s made a lot of progress,” he said, adding, “Everything seems to be going well.”
“The surgery took a bit longer than we thought, but she’s back home and healing,” the proud father shared with his podcast audience. “Thank you for all your prayers for her and our family. She’s a true champion!”
Before the surgery happened, Missy talked about her daughter’s health and mentioned how people kept asking her how many more surgeries Mia might need later on. “The answer is always the same: ‘We just don’t know,’” Missy explained. She also shared that they trust God to help them through this. “Now that Mia is 18, she’s the one handling all the conversations and medical paperwork. It feels a bit odd,” Missy noted. “But it’s a good reminder to rely on the Lord and accept that I can’t control everything.”
Mia also hopes that she’s at “the finish line.”
“Hopefully the last time I’ll see my doctors in this setting! It’s been a long road but we are at the finish line,” brave Mia said.
In 2002, the Robertson family went through a really tough time when they lost their unborn baby. Missy had a miscarriage when she was about eight to ten weeks along in her second pregnancy, and it hit them hard, both physically and emotionally. Soon after that, they were blessed with the arrival of Mia.
Now, the Robertsons are getting ready to welcome another child into their family. They are opening their hearts and home to a little one whose mother couldn’t take care of them.
We hope Mia gets better quickly.
