People who have ever had to say goodbye to their dog know how hard it is. But sometimes, there’s no other choice. It’s the kindest thing to do when the suffering has lasted too long.
I hope you never face this, but if you do, you should stay with your furry friend until the very end. No dog should have to spend its final days alone and frightened with people they don’t know.
Starfish, the dog in this story, was discovered in a box with her legs twisted in a strange way.
People thought she would have to be put to sleep at the vet by the person who found her. Because she was injured, there seemed to be no way to help her.
The vet really didn’t want to end her life, but the dog was hurt too badly. She shouldn’t have been kept alive.
But just moments before Starfish was about to be put down, the head of the rescue came in and stopped everything.
According to Newsweek, she wanted to get a second opinion on Starfish.
They took the puppy to another vet. After a careful examination, they gave her a much brighter outlook.

Starfish was born with a condition known as “Swimmer Puppy Syndrome.” But with the right support, she could improve.
Instead of walking like a typical dog, Starfish seemed more suited for swimming.
However, she was incredibly charming. Soon after, someone decided to adopt her.
“We loved the little dog so much,” said owner Leigh Anne Gray. “She taught us something we had never seen before.
“I grabbed Starfish so quickly when I first saw her.”
“She was too weak to be picked up like a regular puppy.” She was so flat that you had to hold her sideways. But I picked her up and wouldn’t let go.
Starfish’s entire family helped her get back to normal right from the beginning.
Leigh Anne mentioned, “All we needed to do was get her feet under her.”
“Once we placed her on the grass and gave her something to hold onto, she would follow us anywhere.”
But Leigh Anne and her family weren’t the only ones who wanted Starfish to succeed. The staff at the animal center also provided assistance.
“She doesn’t understand what’s wrong with her.” She tries again immediately. Each day, she improves a little more.
After just two months, Starfish could stand on her own. She was running fast like any other puppy.
Everyone in the family felt proud and happy to see the brave dog recover.
“That determination and joy for life were missing from me,” I’m thankful she came into our lives.
Starfish went from being very close to death to becoming a joyful, healthy dog with a bright future.
