The small town of Saucier, Mississippi, is in shock and mourning after the disappearance and tragic death of 6-year-old Gracelyn Vick on Sunday afternoon.
Family members said that Gracelyn went outside to play in her yard around noon but didn’t come back. After several hours without any sign of her, her worried family called the police. The Harrison County Sheriff’s Office quickly organized a search effort, with help from local law enforcement, Gulf Coast Search and Rescue, helicopters, drones, and about 40 volunteers from the community.
Sadly, Gracelyn’s body was discovered later that evening close to her family’s home. Police set up barriers around parts of the family’s property, including areas near a swing set and animal pens, as they carefully collected evidence throughout the night. Gracelyn’s body was taken from the scene around 8 p.m., according to WLOX.
Sheriff Matt Haley spoke out on Monday about the many rumors circulating online, making it clear that no arrests have been made so far. He stated, “It’s too early to say if foul play is involved,” highlighting that the investigation is still ongoing. An autopsy is set to take place at the state crime lab in Biloxi to find out what caused the death.
The community is deeply saddened by the loss of Gracelyn, with many people showing their support and sympathy both online and locally. To help students cope with their feelings about losing their dear classmate, grief counselors are available at Saucier Elementary.
This tragedy is especially hard for Gracelyn’s mother, Vicky Lynn Hutcherson, as it marks the third time she has lost a child in recent years. Just last March 2024, Vicky’s 13-year-old stepdaughter, Victoria Hutcherson, tragically died in a car accident on U.S. 49. Before that, in July 2021, the family faced another heartbreaking loss when Gracelyn’s brother, 18-year-old Larry Hart, passed away from a medical issue.
The community stands together in their sorrow, hoping that the authorities can quickly and thoroughly find out what happened in this tragic situation. Meanwhile, they continue to pray for and support the grieving family, remembering young Gracelyn Vick fondly.
