If you’ve ever taken a trip back to the awesome days of doo-wop, you probably know about the Five Satins and their famous song, “In the Still of the Night.”
This heartfelt melody, recorded in a church basement in 1956, has become a classic that represents love and nostalgia, echoing through the years as a symbol of timeless music.
In 1956, a 19-year-old named Fred Parris was on guard duty in Philadelphia with the U.S. Army, missing his girlfriend, Marla, who was living with her fiancé’s family in Connecticut.
This young soldier, who later became the leader of the Five Satins, had just spent a weekend with “the girl of [his] dreams” and couldn’t stop thinking about her.
“There were other nights that we spent together,” the late singer shared with Smithsonian Magazine in 2004. “But there’s only one first time.”
“When I got back to camp, I went right to the day room. There was a piano there, and I started playing the chords I had in my head and the words that came from my heart. Before I knew it, it was time for guard duty. It was a cold, dark night, and the stars were shining. The scene matched my feelings perfectly,” Parris, who passed away in 2022 at the age of 85, explained.
Combining those deep emotions with beautiful melodies, Parris created the unforgettable doo-wop hit, “In the Still of the Night.”
‘Song was blessed’
The enchanting melodies of the classic song turned into something special when the Five Satins recorded it in 1956 using a couple of tape recorders in the chilly basement of St. Bernadette’s Church in New Haven, Connecticut.
Parris shared in a 2013 interview with the Florida radio show “Doo Wop Revival,” “Since we recorded it at the church, I believe the song was blessed. And so was I… it has stood the test of time.”
Sadly, the song outlasted Parris’ relationship with Marla.
“She went to California to see her mom… and she never returned,” he explained.
Timeless track
Even though “In the Still of the Night” reached #24 on the Billboard Hot 100, its real impact wasn’t just about the numbers. The song connected deeply with people, making it a favorite at school dances and romantic nights. Over time, it also found a place on oldies playlists. It really captured the dreamy and emotional spirit of teenagers in the 1950s.
At first, the song was just a small success, but its unique start with “Shoo-doo-shoo-be-doo,” along with its beautiful melody and smooth singing, made it something special that would last for many years.
Over time, “In the Still of the Night” has been performed by many artists, like The Beach Boys, Debbie Gibson, and Boyz II Men, who helped bring the song to a whole new audience.
The song also became unforgettable when it was featured in popular movies like Dirty Dancing and The Irishman, which helped it stay relevant in pop culture.
“In the Still of the Night” is not just a song; it’s an experience, a moment in time, and a cherished memory. Its rich harmonies, touching lyrics, and timeless theme of love make it a true classic. It perfectly shows how doo-wop can mix simple sounds with deep emotions, creating something that lasts forever.
If you haven’t heard “In the Still of the Night” yet, listening to it feels like stepping into a beautifully kept piece of the past, where the music connects with your heart.
