Doris Day, a famous actress from the Golden Age of Hollywood, died in 2019 when she was 97 years old.
She was loved by many for her talent as both an actress and a singer. She released over 650 songs and appeared in more than 30 movies. Even years after she left us, her influence in the film and music world still inspires people.
Doris Day was a famous actress who really loved animals and was known for being down-to-earth. She became well-known for her movies like Pillow Talk, Love Me or Leave Me, and The Man Who Knew Too Much.
Doris got married four times and had one son named Terry Mulcher. He was born when she was married to Al Jorden, but sadly, he died from cancer in 2004.
Doris Day’s songs like “Sentimental Journey,” “Secret Love,” and “Que Sera Sera” were all honored by being added to the Grammy Hall of Fame. She also cared a lot about animals, which led to the creation of the Doris Day Animal Foundation.
The foundation’s representatives were the ones who announced that Doris Day had passed away. They mentioned that she died from pneumonia and that there would be no burial services, gravestone, or public memorials.
The actress wanted to be cremated, and her loved ones fulfilled her wish.
Bob Bashara, who was a close friend and manager of Day, mentioned that the actress didn’t like to talk about funerals because she was afraid of death.
“She really didn’t like the idea of death, and she couldn’t stand the thought of her pets being put down. It was hard for her to accept that,” he shared in an interview.
“I would suggest that we should make plans for her dogs after she passed away, and she would respond, ‘I don’t want to think about that,’ saying, ‘You just take care of them,’” Bashara remembered.
“When she wrote her will, she had several dogs and wanted to make sure they would be looked after. She avoided conversations about her dogs dying.”
Day helped animal rights by raising $3 million from selling more than 1,000 of her personal belongings. She was also involved in starting a Texas Horse Rescue and Adoption Center, which focuses on helping neglected and abandoned horses.
Growing up in a Catholic family, Day turned to Christian Science after she married producer Martin Melcher. He became a father figure to her son, who took on Melcher’s last name. After Melcher died, Day moved away from organized religion, but she still considered herself a spiritual person.
Bashara talked about Day, saying, “She had faith in God and felt that her singing talent was a gift from Him. She often said, ‘God blessed me with a voice, and I just shared it with the world.'”
This cherished actress stepped away from movies in the 1970s but made a comeback for a couple of TV series. Day also had her own talk show called Doris Day’s Best Friends on the Christian Broadcasting Network, which aired for one year.
Following her passing, Day’s estate was donated to charity.
