Teen athlete Austin Metcalf’s final post is heartbreaking

The tragic death of Austin Metcalf has plunged his Texas community and the nation into grief. At only 17 years old, the Frisco Memorial High School student passed away following a fatal stabbing during a track and field event on April 2, 2025. Tributes have poured in for the young athlete, who was remembered as a talented, compassionate individual deeply devoted to football and his faith.

The incident occurred at Kuykendall Stadium in Frisco, Texas. Frisco Police reported responding to a dispute between two students that escalated into an unforeseen tragedy. Austin was attending the event with his twin brother, Hunter, when he confronted another student, Karmelo Anthony, about vacating a spot in Frisco Memorial’s team tent. The disagreement quickly turned violent.

Hunter later recounted to WFAA that after Austin asked Anthony to move, the latter refused and challenged him to “make me move.” Shortly afterward, Anthony allegedly retrieved a knife from his backpack and stabbed Austin in the chest. The attack was both swift and devastating.

In an effort to save his brother, Hunter held Austin while trying to stop the bleeding as they waited for emergency responders. He then made the heartbreaking call to their parents. Jeff Metcalf, Austin’s father, shared with NBC Dallas-Fort Worth that he rushed to the hospital after hearing the news but tragically, Austin could not be saved. “This is murder,” Jeff said tearfully.

Austin’s final post on X (formerly Twitter), shared two days before his death, has resonated deeply with many: “Faith that God got me ❤️ and my work will pay off.” The post now serves as a poignant reminder of a life filled with hope and promise that was cut short far too soon. Social media users have responded with heartfelt tributes, expressing sorrow and offering prayers for strength to his family.

The accused perpetrator, Karmelo Anthony, also 17 years old and a student at Frisco Centennial High School, has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder. He is currently being held in Collin County Jail on a $1 million bond. Anthony’s father has defended his son publicly, urging people not to rush to judgment until all facts are revealed.

For the Metcalf family, the loss is immeasurable. Jeff Metcalf described Austin as a natural leader whose smile could brighten any room and whose passion for football was unparalleled. A GoFundMe page created in his honor highlights the profound impact Austin had on those around him—peers, coaches, and community members alike—who saw great potential in him.

The senselessness of Austin’s death has left many struggling to comprehend how an ordinary school event turned into such an irreversible tragedy. The Frisco community continues to mourn collectively—classmates, teachers, teammates, and neighbors alike—while supporting one another through this difficult time.

As investigations proceed and legal actions unfold, one thing remains certain: Austin Metcalf’s life ended far too soon. His memory endures as a beacon of faith, hard work, and hope for a future he never got to see. Rest in peace, Austin—you will always be remembered.
