Elizabeth Alice MacGraw, born in 1939 in a small town in New York, quickly rose to fame in the movie industry but also left it just as fast. Growing up, she lived in a place filled with creativity but struggled with money, sharing a home on a quiet nature reserve. Her father, Richard, had a tough childhood in an orphanage, which sometimes made him act unpredictably. Her mother, Frances, supported the family by doing freelance art, while Richard’s attempts to sell his paintings didn’t go well.
With her natural talent, Ali got the chance to study at Rosemary Hall and later at Wellesley College. At 22, she moved to New York City and started working behind the scenes in fashion at Harper’s Bazaar. Her career took a big turn when the famous editor Diana Vreeland hired her as an assistant, a job that was very demanding. Fashion photographer Melvin Sokolsky noticed her unique look and promoted her to a styling position, where she thrived for six years. MacGraw’s Hollywood journey kicked off with the hit film “Goodbye, Columbus” in 1969, which won her a Golden Globe. In her personal life, she married producer Robert Evans and had a son, but their marriage ended when she started dating Steve McQueen. Their relationship was passionate but troubled, as he wanted her to give up her career for a more traditional role at home. Their marriage ended in 1978, leaving her without financial stability due to a strict prenuptial agreement.
After her divorce, MacGraw encountered difficulties with substance abuse that affected her career. While filming “Convoy” in 1978, she battled addiction, and her later movies did not do well at the box office. Frustrated with how the industry treated older actresses, she turned to interior design and took on occasional acting jobs during the 1980s. As the chances for roles became fewer, she decided to get help at the Betty Ford Clinic in 1986. In 1993, a terrible wildfire burned down her house in California, leading her to move away from Los Angeles.
At 85 years old, Ali MacGraw lives a calm life in Tesuque, close to Santa Fe, New Mexico, proudly showing off her silver hair as she accepts the natural aging process. She has stepped away from the demands of Hollywood and found happiness in a more straightforward way of living.
