The case of Madeleine McCann, who went missing on the night of May 3, 2007, is still considered one of the most talked-about missing person cases in recent times.
Then 4-year-old Madeleine went missing from an apartment in Praia da Luz, in Portugal, while her parents were out having dinner.
17 years after she vanished, her parents are convinced that she’s still alive.
On her 18th birthday, May 12, 2022, her heartbroken parents shared a touching message. “We love you, we’re waiting for you, and we will never give up.”
In 2020, detectives looking into Madeleine McCann’s case believed she had been murdered. German prosecutor Hans Christian Wolters mentioned that he doesn’t think the suspect, Christian Brueckner, took Madeleine from Praia da Luz to Germany, as some people have thought. Instead, he believes she was killed in Portugal, according to the Evening Standard Newspaper. Wolters also expressed hope, saying, “I am optimistic we will solve this case.”
Christian Brueckner, a 44-year-old man from Germany, is currently in prison for seven years because he raped a 72-year-old American woman in Praia da Luz back in 2005. He is also waiting for a trial for another case where he is accused of raping an Irish tour guide in 2004.
The case of Madeleine McCann has gained attention again after a 21-year-old woman named Julia Wendell from Poland claimed to be her. However, DNA tests showed that she is not the missing girl.
Recently, Madeleine’s mother, Kate McCann, mentioned that she thinks a note in the restaurant’s reservation book might have played a role in her daughter’s disappearance, according to the Netflix documentary series, The Disappearance of Madeleine McCann.
Kate also opened up about these suspicions in her book Madeleine: Our Daughter’s Disappearance and the Continuing Search for Her.
The note explained that the group planned to leave their kids sleeping in their nearby apartments while they went out to eat. Unfortunately, it seems that the restaurant staff and possibly other guests at the Ocean Club Resort in Praia da Luz could see it.
Kate believes that this note might have been seen by someone with bad intentions, which could have played a part in Madeleine’s disappearance. She worries that the note revealed important information about the McCanns’ routine, making it easier for someone to target their apartment.
“I was horrified to see that, probably without realizing the consequences, the receptionist had included the reason for our request: we wanted to eat close to our apartments because we were leaving our young children alone there and checking on them regularly,” Kate wrote. “We will regret this deeply for the rest of our lives.”
In a recent social media update, Madeleine’s parents shared their frustration over losing a legal battle against Portuguese officer Goncalo Amara, whom they believe obstructed the search for their daughter.
We truly hope Madeleine is still alive and that she will eventually be reunited with her parents who have never lost hope of finding her.
