Studies indicate that people with this blood type have higher chance of living to 100

In a remarkable advancement, researchers have discovered 10 distinct blood “markers” that differentiate centenarians from individuals who pass away earlier, enabling them to forecast who is more likely to attain the age of 100.

Once regarded as medical wonders, centenarians are now not as uncommon as they used to be. In fact, the esteemed demographic – individuals aged 100 and above – currently constitutes the fastest-growing age group worldwide, with their population approximately doubling every ten years since the 1970s.

This extraordinary trend not only signifies improvements in healthcare and quality of life – it is also prompting scientists to investigate the internal processes of those who enjoy the longest lives, particularly at the microscopic level of blood and biology.

A pioneering long-term study conducted in Sweden may provide the insights needed.

Tracked longevity for decades

Researchers examined 44,637 individuals from Stockholm County utilizing data from a vast population-based repository of clinical laboratory results. These participants, all born between 1893 and 1920 (ages 64 to 99), underwent routine blood tests between 1985 and 1996. Following this, there was a lengthy period of observation: participants were monitored for up to 35 years, employing national registers that documented disease, mortality, and residency status.

Among these individuals, 1,224 reached the age of 100, with 84.6% being women – which aligns with established gender disparities in longevity.

However, the researchers were not solely focused on the outcomes. They sought to determine whether blood markers, collected decades prior, could indicate who would ultimately live the longest.

It appears that they can – at least to a certain extent.

Extreme values

The scientists looked at 12 routine blood markers. These included:

  • Glucose and total cholesterol for metabolic health
  • Creatinine for kidney function
  • Liver enzymes such as gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), and lactate dehydrogenase (LD)
  • Iron markers and uric acid, often associated with inflammation
  • Albumin, which signals nutritional status

Their conclusions were precise: extreme values – either too high or too low – reduced the odds of reaching 100.

Key findings

Researcher Karin Modig states in a Live Science article, “We discovered that, overall, individuals who reached their hundredth birthday generally exhibited lower levels of glucose, creatinine, and uric acid starting from their 60s.” For instance, very few centenarians had glucose levels exceeding 6.5 earlier in their lives, nor did they have creatinine levels above 125.

The results indicated that reduced levels of glucose, creatinine, uric acid, ASAT, GGT, ALP, TIBC (total iron binding capacity), and LD were linked to a higher probability of achieving centenarian status.

Moreover, individuals with significantly low levels of total cholesterol or iron “were less likely to reach the age of 100 compared to those with elevated levels.”

A nuanced perspective on cholesterol and iron

One of the most fascinating aspects was the complexity surrounding cholesterol.

The study notes, “We found that elevated total cholesterol levels correlated with an increased likelihood of becoming a centenarian, which contradicts clinical guidelines regarding cholesterol levels but aligns with previous research indicating that high cholesterol is generally beneficial for mortality in advanced age.”

Likewise, very low iron levels were linked to diminished chances of reaching 100, underscoring the significance of maintaining balanced, rather than extreme, laboratory values.

Genes and lifestyle

According to Modig, the findings “indicate a possible connection between metabolic health, nutrition, and exceptional longevity.”

“However, the study does not permit any conclusions regarding which lifestyle factors or genetic components are accountable for the biomarker values. Nevertheless, it is reasonable to assume that elements such as nutrition and alcohol consumption may have an influence. Monitoring your kidney and liver values, along with glucose and uric acid levels as you age, is likely a prudent approach,” she elaborated.

“That being said, chance likely contributes at some stage in achieving an extraordinary age. However, the observation of differences in biomarkers long before death implies that genetics and lifestyle may also be influential,” Modig further stated.

What this signifies for you

This is not an invitation to pursue perfection in your laboratory results. It serves as a reminder that maintaining healthy mid-range values may be more advantageous for long-term health than striving to minimize certain numbers to their lowest possible levels.
