After eight long years of trying to end their marriage, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have finally reached a divorce agreement.
On Monday, December 30, Jolie, who is 49, and Pitt, who is 61, officially signed the divorce papers, as confirmed by Us Weekly.
Jolie’s lawyer, James Simon, shared with Us, “More than eight years ago, Angelina decided to file for divorce from Mr. Pitt. She and the kids moved out of the homes they shared with him, and since then, she has been working on finding peace and healing for their family. This is just one step in a long journey that began eight years ago. Honestly, Angelina is tired, but she feels relieved that this part is finally done.”
A rep for Pitt declined to confirm or comment.
Pitt and Jolie were a couple for ten years before they got married in August 2014. However, just two years later, in September 2016, Jolie decided to file for divorce after being married for only two years and together for a decade. She mentioned that they had irreconcilable differences. They have six children together: Maddox, Pax, Zahara, Shiloh, and twins Knox and Vivienne. At that time, Jolie’s representative said she filed for divorce “for the health of the family.” Pitt was also looked into by the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services because of an incident involving their oldest son on a plane. Although the FBI investigated the claims, which Pitt denied, no charges were ever filed against him.
Since November 2019, they have been legally single, but they continue to fight in court over custody arrangements and their French winery, Château Miraval.
In November, Jolie made a significant move in her ongoing legal battle with Pitt when a judge tentatively decided that Pitt must hand over documents and messages that Jolie said would show he hid claims of domestic violence against her and their kids.
Jolie’s lawyer, Paul Murphy, told Us at the time, “I want to stress that Angelina never wanted any of this. She didn’t file any charges, she left all their properties, and she was the one who initially tried to sell him the business.” He added, “To this day, Mr. Pitt has never faced consequences for his actions and has always controlled Miraval and the winery, yet he still wants more.”
The statement wrapped up with: “She wants this to be over, the kids want this to be over, and Mr. Pitt should concentrate on mending their family instead of continuing with lawsuits. If he doesn’t, Angelina will defend herself in court by showing the evidence that proves Pitt’s claims are completely false.”
Later that month, a source close to Pitt told Us that the judge’s ruling was “mostly irrelevant because he has already shared so much information.”
Jolie and Pitt have been in a legal battle over Miraval for the past year, and this is separate from their divorce issues. The fight over the $164 million French estate and winery started in February 2022 when Pitt sued Jolie, saying she sold her shares of Château Miraval without his permission. He argued that they had agreed to only sell their shares if the other one approved.
In November, Us reported that a judge in Los Angeles decided that the case about Château Miraval will go to trial, and Pitt’s claims against Jolie can continue. The judge found that Pitt had enough evidence to support his claims about the contract related to their shares, and he also had valid points about interference. This news came after a judge had previously rejected Jolie’s request to dismiss the case.
