Angelina Jolie: Scene with Denzel Washington Was “Best Sex”

Although The Bone Collector didn’t sweep critics off their feet, Angelina Jolie found the experience memorable for several reasons.

Following the immense popularity of Seven in 1995, studios rushed to produce their own takes on the serial killer thriller genre.

Universal Pictures contributed to this wave with The Bone Collector, adapting Jeffery Deaver’s 1997 crime novel. The film assembled a prestigious cast, headlined by Academy Award winners Angelina Jolie and Denzel Washington, alongside nominee Queen Latifah.

The story unfolds in New York City, focusing on Lincoln Rhyme, a brilliant detective left quadriplegic. Despite his physical state, Rhyme’s exceptional mind makes him indispensable in solving the city’s most bizarre and gruesome crimes.

Jolie plays Amelia, a rookie patrol officer who partners with Rhyme. As they delve into a series of disturbing murders, racing against time to find a killer, the city transforms into a dangerous maze.

Jolie has said she was immediately drawn to The Bone Collector script, recalling a sense of fear and unease that made her unable to put it down.

She admitted that the script terrified her, captivating her attention to the point where she couldn’t stop reading. The story lingered in her mind long after she finished.

One of the film’s strengths is the complexity of Washington’s character, Lincoln Rhyme.

As a quadriplegic, Rhyme’s paralysis creates a unique dynamic with Jolie’s Amelia. While she investigates crime scenes, she constantly communicates her findings to Rhyme, who guides her from his bedside.

Jolie Described the Dynamic as a “Huge Turn-On”

Unlike typical romances that rely on physical interaction, The Bone Collector explores a deeper connection through its absence.

Rhyme’s physical limitations force an emotional and intellectual intimacy between the characters, creating a subtle yet powerful bond that transcends traditional romance.

Shortly after the film’s release, Jolie spoke about the connection between her character and Rhyme, noting that “seducing someone with your mind” was particularly appealing.

Jolie reflected on the characters’ journeys and the profound relationship that develops between them.

She highlighted a specific scene where Amelia uses her intellect and sense of smell to captivate Rhyme, describing it as “the best sex I ever had.”

Despite on-screen Intimacy, Jolie Felt “Really Lonely”

Jolie seemed to be referring to the unique mental intimacy she shared with Washington during filming.

Although the actors didn’t have a real-life romantic relationship, the connection they forged through their characters created a powerful sense of closeness that Jolie found deeply gratifying.

However, the experience wasn’t without its difficulties. Jolie also revealed that filming The Bone Collector was “really lonely” and led to self-doubt.

She explained that she felt incapable of leading the film, handling the responsibility, physically managing the role, and saving lives as a police officer.

Jolie added that the role took a mental toll, pushing her close to insanity due to her character’s internal struggles.

The Bone Collector premiered on November 5, 1999. Despite mixed reviews, the film grossed an impressive $151.5 million worldwide, exceeding its $48 million budget.

In June 2023, reports surfaced about a potential sequel, with Washington and Jolie expected to reprise their roles. The reunion of these two stars, known for their on-screen chemistry, would generate considerable excitement.
