Martine Croxall, a BBC News presenter, is now thanking people for their support.
The 56-year-old seasoned news anchor expressed her disagreement with certain phrases displayed on the teleprompter. This past weekend, she opted to diverge from the script provided by her teleprompter.
Croxall has been employed by the BBC for three decades. Since commencing her role in 1991, she has chosen to modify the text presented on the teleprompter.
During the broadcast, she was reading from the autocue, discussing individuals who are particularly vulnerable to heat-related health issues due to the rising temperatures in the UK.
While referencing a study conducted by the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, she nearly stated that ‘pregnant people’ should exercise greater caution when enjoying the warmer climate.
However, before completing her thought, she swiftly corrected herself, opting for ‘women’ instead of people, and signaled with her eyes that she was emphasizing a point.
“Malcom Mistry, who participated in the research, indicates that the elderly, pregnant individuals – women – and those with pre-existing health conditions must take necessary precautions,” Croxall remarked during the broadcast.
Social media ignited a discussion on the topic. British author J.K. Rowling promptly expressed her support for the anchor on X by tweeting, “I have a new favourite BBC presenter.”
Typically, the phrase ‘pregnant people’ is employed to promote gender neutrality and inclusivity for non-binary and transgender individuals who are expecting. Nevertheless, this terminology does not receive universal approval, particularly from groups that are outspoken against transgender individuals.
Croxall has been quite forthright about her views on this issue, having previously stated in a discussion with a transgender activist that, ‘sex is binary and immutable.’
The news presenter took to social media to share her own thoughts about the entire thing. She wrote, “A huge thank you to everyone who has chosen to follow me today for whatever reason. It’s been quite a ride…”
Croxall also said that she knew there might be consequences to her actions and she is ‘braced’ for a talk from the higher-ups, if they decide to raise an issue with her.
The entire debate is one that is currently at the national forefront in several nations.
