Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have now been married for five years. While it marked Harry’s first time down the aisle, it wasn’t Meghan’s first marriage. Years before becoming the Duchess of Sussex, Meghan was married to Hollywood producer Trevor Engelson. Unfortunately, their relationship didn’t last and ended on a difficult note.
Today, both Meghan and Trevor have moved on and remarried. Interestingly, Engelson has quietly built a substantial career and fortune—something that may surprise those unfamiliar with his life post-divorce.
Though Engelson generally keeps a low profile, a close associate has recently shared insight into how he handled the breakup—and how he ultimately found his own version of “revenge.”
The Early Days of Meghan and Trevor
Meghan met Trevor Engelson at the start of her acting career. Born in Great Neck, New York, in 1976, Engelson studied at USC’s School of Communications before entering the film industry. Starting as a production assistant, he eventually became a successful producer, working on films like Remember Me, which starred Robert Pattinson and featured a cameo by Meghan.
His resume also includes License to Wed, All About Steve, and six episodes as an executive producer on the TV adaptation of Heathers. More recently, he’s found major success with the FX series Snowfall, which concluded after six seasons. The show was produced through Underground, his own management and production company based in Beverly Hills.
When he’s not involved in television and film projects, Trevor manages a roster of screenwriters, authors, directors, and actors in Los Angeles.
A Whirlwind Romance and Wedding
Trevor and Meghan first met in 2004, according to The Sun. After dating for about seven years, they got married in 2011 at the Jamaica Inn in Ocho Rios. The celebration lasted three days, featuring beach parties, brunches, and even a wheelbarrow race. The actual ceremony, however, was brief—just 15 minutes.
At the time, Meghan was still working her way up the entertainment ladder. She had a stint on Deal or No Deal, but according to royal biographer Andrew Morton, Trevor rarely visited her on set—unlike the other boyfriends and husbands of the models, which raised some eyebrows. His busy schedule as a producer often kept him away, and even during her downtime, he was frequently tied up with work.
“They were both ambitious and driven,” Morton wrote. “But Trevor was equally, if not more, preoccupied with his own career.”
Meghan’s Career Takes Off—and the Distance Grows
Everything changed when Meghan landed a breakout role in Suits. The show, filmed primarily in Toronto, took her far from Los Angeles, creating a long-distance strain in their marriage. Although they stayed in touch through video chats, it wasn’t enough to maintain the closeness they once had.
“Whether she realized it or not, Meghan—who once said she couldn’t picture life without Trevor—was building a new life in Toronto,” Morton noted. “She was no longer dependent on Trevor’s network or support. She was standing on her own.”
By 2013, Meghan and Trevor had divorced, citing irreconcilable differences. At the time, rumors swirled that Meghan mailed her wedding and engagement rings back to Trevor—signaling the final end of their relationship.
A Painful Split
Sources close to Trevor described him as deeply hurt by the breakup. Meghan’s half-brother, Thomas Markle Jr., claimed Trevor had been completely devoted to her. Another insider told The Sun that Trevor was heartbroken: “She suddenly had no more time for him. Meghan broke his heart. He’s still not over her.”
Author Lady Colin Campbell and Meghan’s former childhood friend Nikki Priddy echoed this, suggesting that after moving to Toronto and befriending celebrities like stylist Jessica Mulroney, Meghan’s priorities shifted. Campbell described the dynamic between the couple as contrasting: Trevor was relaxed, often slightly disheveled, while Meghan was polished and precise—perhaps a clue to their incompatibility.
Life After Divorce: From Heartbreak to Happiness
Following the breakup, Engelson stepped away from the limelight. Though still a successful producer, he kept a low profile. For a time, he dated Real Housewives of New York star Bethenny Frankel, who later spoke about their brief romance on Australia’s Kyle and Jackie O Show in 2018.
Interestingly, in 2017, Engelson was reportedly attached to a television project about a man co-parenting with his ex-wife after she marries a British royal. Although producers insisted the characters weren’t based on Trevor or Meghan, the similarities raised eyebrows. The project never moved beyond the pilot stage.
Eventually, Engelson found love again. In 2017, he began dating Tracey Kurland, the daughter of a wealthy mortgage executive. They married in May 2019, about a year after Meghan and Harry’s royal wedding. Tracey reportedly inherited around $250 million after her father’s death in 2021, making the couple incredibly wealthy.
Together, Trevor and Tracey have welcomed two daughters: Ford Grace, born in August 2020, and Sienna Lee, born in November 2021.
“The Ultimate Revenge”
Though Trevor never publicly discussed the breakup, a longtime friend recently spoke to Daily Mail, offering rare insight into how he’s doing today.
“For a long time, Trevor struggled. Meghan’s decision to leave—and later marry Prince Harry—was incredibly painful for him,” the friend revealed. “He was constantly reminded of her because of all the media attention, especially after the Oprah interview. But that chapter is closed now.”
The friend continued: “He told me he’s never been happier. He loves being a dad, he’s madly in love with his wife, and he’s fulfilled both personally and professionally.”
Those close to him even avoid bringing up Meghan’s name—nicknamed the “M word”—because he’s fully moved on. “In some ways, you could say he’s living an even better life than Meghan,” the friend added. “He probably has more money, he’s doing what he loves, and he’s out of the public eye. That’s the ultimate revenge.”
Trevor and his family reportedly live in a luxurious part of Los Angeles. According to those around him, he’s thriving and “never stops smiling” when he’s with his wife and kids.
