People are placing coins on military tombstones, when you learn why you’ll pull out your change

Americans really honor and appreciate the brave men and women in the military who protect our country and our freedom. This respect becomes even more important on Memorial Day, a special day when we remember those who gave their lives for our nation.

People have discovered a special way to honor fallen soldiers by leaving coins on their gravestones. If you happen to see any coins, it’s best not to disturb them, but you can add one of your own.

These coins let the families of the soldiers know that someone has visited the grave and appreciates the sacrifices their loved ones made. The type of coin left shows how close the visitor was to the soldier. For families, seeing those shiny coins is really meaningful because it shows that people still remember the brave men and women who fought for our freedom.

This act is both touching and reassuring.

If you find a penny, it means the person who left it wanted to thank a soldier they never met. A nickel indicates that the visitor and the soldier were in boot camp together. A dime represents soldiers who served alongside each other, while a quarter signifies that the visitor was there when the soldier passed away.

Occasionally, cemetery staff collect these coins, which are then used to help cover the burial costs of veterans.

Dave Taylor, a veteran of the Vietnam War, always takes the opportunity to place coins on the gravestones of his fallen comrades. He believes that this is a way to keep the memories of these brave military members alive.

“It’s a story about life, about sacrifice, and about remembrance,” said Taylor.
