Family ties are meant to be super strong, like a rock, but sometimes they can be really delicate, like a thin thread. It only takes one little mistake for everything to fall apart and for relationships to be damaged forever.
As Ann and John’s wedding anniversary was coming up, they were really looking forward to celebrating with their sweet daughter and their family. But there was one person missing: John’s dad, who had left when John was just seven years old.
They hadn’t spoken in years, even though John’s dad tried to reach out a few times, like before John got married and when John’s daughter was born.
This was another attempt that John’s father, Eric, tried to make amends with his son.
While John and his daughter were outside, Ann got a package delivered. She was super excited to find out what it was and who it was from. When she opened it, she discovered a gorgeous embroidered pillow that matched their living room decor perfectly. The sender turned out to be Eric. Inside, there was a note that said, “John and Ann, happy 3rd anniversary. With love, Eric.”
Ann realized that John might not be thrilled about the gift. She understood her husband’s complicated feelings towards his father, and even though she tried to encourage John to forgive Eric, she didn’t want to push him too hard because she respected his feelings and didn’t want to invade his personal space.
When John came home he immediately asked Ann what was inside the box she was holding in her hands.
Unaware of what his reaction would be, she told him it was a pillow from his father.
John felt really upset and quickly picked up the pillow to check it out. He remembered how Eric had been in some shady business before, which made him super careful since he didn’t trust his dad, who he hadn’t seen in a while.
Holding the pillow tightly, he stepped outside and tossed it onto the ground. He told Ann that he thought there was something inside because he could hear a ticking sound. Ann thought John was just being dramatic, but when she grabbed the pillow and listened closely, she could hear the ticking too.
Was Eric trying to hurt them? If that’s the case, why would he do that?
John decided to tear open the pillow, but first, he asked Ann to record it on video, just in case they found something illegal inside. She grabbed John’s phone and started filming while dialing Eric on her cellphone.
“Eric, what’s in that pillow you sent us?” Ann asked in a serious tone. “Your son is really worried; there’s something ticking inside it. What’s going on, Eric?”
Eric sounded strangely calm. “The ticking is from a timer that will unlock a box with my gift for you,” he whispered.
Sure enough, there was a box inside that beautiful pillow.
I can’t believe it, Ann. That present is the final thing I want to give you before I go.
When he said this, John opened the box and found a check for $100,000.
He was shocked. Could his dad really be serious?
John quickly grabbed the phone and asked his dad if the money was truly his and if he was sure he wasn’t getting him into any trouble.
Eric confirmed that the money was indeed John’s and pleaded with him to take it for his daughter’s future.
John felt confused about what to do, but if his dad was really dying, maybe it was the right moment for them to get together and fix their relationship.
A few days later, John, Ann, and their daughter met Eric at the nearby park. They chatted for hours, and John could sense that his father regretted all the mistakes he had made.
This meeting helped John find peace, as he was finally able to forgive his dad for leaving him when he was just a kid and really needed him.
