Some stories are so tragic they leave you utterly shaken. This is one of those heartbreaking accounts. A young boy, just ten years old, lost his life in a manner that is both shocking and incomprehensible.
Dakota Levi Stevens had only been living in his foster home for a month when his life was cut short in a horrifying incident. His foster mother, 48-year-old Jennifer Lee Wilson, has been charged with reckless homicide in Berrien County, Michigan. The details surrounding Dakota’s death are deeply disturbing, and a warning is necessary for the sensitive nature of what follows.
Reports indicate that earlier in the day, Dakota had run away but was later found at a neighbor’s house. Upon returning home, he began misbehaving—throwing himself to the ground and acting out.
Wilson’s response? She sat on him.
This wasn’t a fleeting moment of poor judgment. Wilson, who weighs 340 pounds (over 150 kilograms), pressed her full weight onto Dakota, who weighed just 90 pounds, for approximately five minutes.

At the time, Wilson was on the phone with Dakota’s caseworker. Despite his screams, she continued to sit on him. She later told authorities that she believed Dakota was pretending and even asked him if he was “faking” when he cried out.
When she finally rolled him over, she noticed something alarming—his eyelids had turned pale.
A child in the house immediately called 911, but it was already too late. By the time emergency responders arrived, Dakota was unresponsive. He was airlifted to a hospital and placed on life support, but tragically, he passed away two days later on April 25, 2024.
An autopsy revealed devastating injuries: severe internal trauma, organ damage, soft tissue injuries, and hemorrhaging in his liver and lungs. The official cause of death was listed as mechanical asphyxia—Dakota had been crushed to death.
This heartbreaking case has sent shockwaves across the nation as more distressing details have emerged.

Just half an hour before paramedics arrived, court documents revealed that Dakota had run to a neighbor’s house and begged her to adopt him. He reportedly told her that his parents had hit him in the face.
Meanwhile, Wilson told investigators that when she tried to stop Dakota from running away again, she wasn’t sure if she had tackled him or if they had fallen together but claimed her intention was only to restrain him.
In October 2024, Wilson pleaded guilty to reckless homicide, according to CBS News.
In January 2025, Wilson received her sentence: six years in prison, with one year suspended to be served on probation.
As reported by The Indianapolis Star, Dakota had been placed in Wilson’s care by the Department of Child Services just one month before his tragic death. At the time of the incident, other foster children were also living in her home; they were removed following the tragedy.
In his obituary, Dakota was remembered as a boy who “loved being outdoors” and always “marched to the beat of his own drum.”

While nothing can bring Dakota back, sharing his story ensures that his voice is not forgotten. Children in foster care deserve safety, love, and a system that prioritizes their well-being rather than allowing them to fall through the cracks.
Jennifer Lee Wilson will serve her sentence for what happened to Dakota—but no punishment can undo this devastating loss. Rest in peace, Dakota—you deserved so much better than this world gave you.
